Fall 2025

A Season of Change

As we say goodbye to the fullness of summer, the gardens have quietly shifted into autumn’s golden light, and the foliage has begun its annual transformation. It’s easy to see why Bob Bullington loved this time of year—he was an avid propagator of Japanese maples, and each fall they return the favor by putting on a show of color that takes our breath away.

Our annual Fall Plant Sale was another success, thanks to our loyal community of gardeners, volunteers, and supporters. The weather cooperated, and the energy of the weekend reminded us how deeply rooted Bullington Gardens is in the hearts of so many. We’ve also enjoyed several special fall events, including our Volunteer Appreciation celebration and a company gathering for Family Tree Care. That group, in particular, has shown up time and again since Hurricane Helene, helping us clear fallen trees and restore areas of the property. Their generosity and hard work have been a true gift.

As many of you know, this will be my final newsletter article as Director of Bullington Gardens. I want to express my deepest thanks for the kind messages, encouragement, and good wishes you’ve shared as I prepare to enter retirement at the end of this month. Your support and friendship have meant the world to me, and I will carry them with me always.

In the months ahead, Bullington will be in good hands. Our Education Coordinator, Isaac Wyatt, will serve as Interim Director for six months, through June 2026. Once the state hiring freeze is lifted, the hiring committee will move forward in selecting the next permanent director. I know Bullington will continue to thrive and inspire under Isaac’s capable leadership and with the dedication of our remarkable staff, volunteers, and community partners.

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, I hope you’ll take time to walk the gardens and enjoy the quiet splendor of the season. Bullington has always been a place of renewal, learning, and beauty—and it will continue to be so, for many years to come.

Bullington Gardens Welcomes Back Public School Programs

We’re thrilled to have our public-school programs back in full swing at Bullington Gardens! This year, we’re working with students from all four Henderson County high schools, including participants in the Exceptional Children’s (EC) Program and the Occupational Course of Study (OCS) Program. Each week, we welcome around 35 students who engage with the gardens through hands-on learning and meaningful work.

Our BOOST students have jumped right in—learning about the gardens and playing an important role in keeping them thriving. From clearing out flower beds to planting new shrubs in Fairy Acres and helping establish our winter cover crops, their efforts are truly appreciated.

Meanwhile, our EC students have been learning about the importance of cover crops and how they benefit our soil. This week, they’re also taking part in the Symbolic Monarch Migration program by sending paper monarch butterflies to students in Mexico. These symbolic butterflies will “migrate” south for the winter and return to schools across the United States in the spring—fostering connections not just across the country, but internationally as well.

Adult Education Updates

Our adult education classes are winding down for the season, and we’re excited to share that most of our fall classes sold out! Looking ahead, planning is already underway for our 2026 class schedule. You can expect to see some of our tried-and-true favorites alongside new, exciting offerings. We’ll also be launching a few Master Series programs next year—stay tuned for more details!
